When the aroma of freshly brewed coffee--from freshly ground beans--wafts into your bedroom in the morning, you won't need your alarm clock. Preset this coffeemaker for your desired wake-up time, add coffee beans to the grinder, and in the morning the beans are ground to a medium grind and hot coffee awaits in the 10-cup stainless steel, double-wall insulated thermal carafe. You can also program the machine to start brewing at the end of a dinner party to avoid having to get up from the table, or to have hot coffee waiting after a brisk winter walk. When making fewer than five cups of coffee, use the 1-to-4-cups setting to improve extraction and heat; coffeemakers without this setting often lack the time to heat up properly, and coffee comes out cooler. A disposable charcoal filter removes chlorine and odors from tap water, improving coffee flavor, and should be changed every few months. Other features include a gold-tone commercial-style filter (or use No. 4 basket-style paper filters); capacity to use preground coffee instead of beans; 30-second Brew Pause, which allows a cup be poured before brewing is complete; and an audible tone to indicate the pot is ready. I have had this for over a year with no problems. The cofee is good. But it does have an annoyingly loud sound while grinding. No one could sleep through it It could take the place of your alarm clock! It brews quickly! It is a bit of work to clean all the parts out! But if you want a programmable grind & brew machice I would recommend!

Unit was returned as it was not the one I had wanted, It was the 600 and I wanted the 900, Amazon was really good about taking it back and I did get the 900. Be careful when ordering this coffee maker, the 600 and 900 looks alike when ordering.
 A few filter tips make for a perfect cup of coffee August 13, 2010

Most of my opinions were expressed by "In Defense of the Grind & Brew". I have loved using this coffee maker in many different capacities.
However, after using this machine for 5 years in various ways, I have found a few tricks for the perfect cup of coffee.
1) For 4 CUP OR LESS, I found that ADDING a paper filter makes for bolder flavor. The water goes through the metal basket filter too fast with less grounds but this corrects the problem inherent to making less coffee.
2) For 8-10 CUPS, I found that using JUST a paper filter and taking out the metal basket filter was the key to keeping it from overflowing. Otherwise, the water goes through the basket filter and grounds too slowly and tends to overflow.
I feel these are minor user adjustments that are part of the art you have to find in the kitchen
